A Business Lunch at The Magnum

After a busy morning with a client, ‘The PM’,  in-house interviewing on Tuesday I decided to take him to The Magnum for some ‘refreshing’ and to mull over the meetings so far! Happily situated just a few minutes walk from my office and also knowing Chris, the owner, it is a place I have visited on several occasions.

A clever modern/vintage fusion

The decor is very relaxed and a charming fusion of modern, clean lines and an old style salon feel with a fireplace, wooden floors, palms in large pots and a chandelier. Split into two sections, one more formal for dining, they are also very fortunate to have outside seating which catches the late afternoon/early evening sun just perfectly. Not that I was there that long (this time) or for that matter, there was any sun!

Stylish Menus

Being a very busy day for me I sensibly opted to forgo the wine list (audible gasp I know but it’s true!) and instead had water but their cellar is pretty comprehensive with a good mix and several options by the glass. It was also great to see some of the lovely local Stewart Brewing’s Edinburgh Gold on sale.

The Menu itself is very stylish and the Lunch options are simple with clean dishes made largely from Scottish ingredients and covers all the classics such as Haggis, Cullen Skink, Fish & Chips, Steak, Burgers and Cranachan. I went for the Scottish Beef & Onion Burger with Plum Tomato and Shallot Relish, Grilled Cheddar & home made chunky chips and The PM went for the Tempura of Pittenweem Haddock with a Green Pea Puree and the same chunky home made chips. They do a lunch special of 2 courses for £10.95 or 3 for £12.95 or you can pick and choose as you please prices range from £4.95 to £19.95 (The Evening Menu £3.95-£21.95)

The Pittenweem Haddock Tempura

The staff were fantastic, not only had we been late for our reservation but had so much to discuss we kept forgetting to choose our food, the staff were very personable and never made us feel like we should be rushing.

A more modern feel

The Magnum scored really well, the Bathrooms got an 8/10, The staff a 9/10 and the overall lunch experience a very respectable 8/10. The food was of a good standard, the service great and a superb environment for a Business Lunch and a venue that won’t leave a huge dent in your wallet. Would definitely recommend!
