Supper at The Saint in Stockbridge

After Mr G’s first appearance on Eating Edinburgh back in the Autumn (Mange Tout a L’escargot Bleu) he was keen to catch up and get another ‘slice of fame’. Being late January we were both looking for something cheap & cheerful so decided to check on to see if there were any good deals in the city centre.

There were a couple of potentials and we settled on the ‘2 courses for £12.00’ at The Saint in Stockbridge, an interesting looking restaurant, that was highly rated and one I had never tried before.

Mr G's Rabbit & Pork Rillette

The Saint is incredibly welcoming on a cold, dark Winter’s evening, on walking down the steps and in through the front door, a fire is merrily blazing away, armchairs huddled around and a small bar sits directly ahead with the dining area to the left. The decor is simple, classic colours and with the occasional nod to a bygone era. To my, somewhat fanciful mind, it feels like the result of ‘below stairs’ getting up to mischief while the family were away and claiming the area for their own.

Poached Smoked Haddock with Black Pudding & Hash Brown

The menu met with my approval, short and sweet! One page and still hard to choose! Luckily Mr G and I have similar tastes so we were able to try the things that had most caught our fancy! The rabbit & pork rillette for Mr G and the poached smoked haddock with black pudding for myself. Both were very tasty although I personally feel that mine was the winner! I could have left happy just on that one course.

Roast Cod with Shallot & Red Wine Jus

By the time we were washing down our starters with a cheeky, young Primitivo, one of my favourite wines (and also one of the cheapest on the menu) the restaurant was completely full with a mixed clientele creating a nice quiet buzz. For my main, I went for the pork escalopes in a marsala cream sauce & Mr G, the roast cod with a shallot & red wine jus. Again, unfussy presentation and very tasty!

After the richness of my two courses, even I was toiling to finish my main, however Mr G had no such trouble and decided to push the boat out and have a dessert! The lemon curd syllabub served with warm, homemade shortbread (nice touch) was quickly despatched the way of the rest, I had a wee taste (using the extra spoon that was so thoughtfully brought out with the pudding) a little sweet for me but it didn’t seem a problem for my companion!

The 2 courses for £12.00 offer available on is great value as the starters are priced around £6.00 and the mains around £12.00 so basically, we got the starters gratis! The wine was well priced and the staff were ‘triendly’ (OK, so I made that up! trendy & friendly!) and the service consistently excellent. Acording to MrG, the only thing that let it down were the bathrooms which I was assured wouldn’t make it very high up the EE scale! Although, as I negligently forgot to try them, out I can’t really comment.

I have been to the Saint quite a few times now and always leave with the same thought- I think they are trying to do too much in a small space. Their grub is yummy but the bar space leaves much to be desired! Wherever you sit there’s a problem – do you crowd at the tiny bar or sit next to the cupboard the staff are always wanting to open or perhaps in front of the fire where you will be toasted. Finally, you could risk piles by sitting at the window seat. Bah I will stick to coming in just for their grub!
