Lunch at Pho Vietnam – not sure if I want to tell you all about this find!

I was recommended Pho Vietnam some time ago from one of Eating Edinburgh’s readers and as yet hadn’t had chance to try it out however a new job re-homing me in the West End meant that it was top of my hit list so Day 2 of the new gig & a couple of colleagues (Surfpunkian & The Gurnett) and I took a wee wander over!

PHO (pronounced ‘fuh’) is the National dish of Vietnam, a bowl of rice noodle soup served with fresh herbs and sauces. The ingredients are largely healthy and all dishes are freshly made in-house.

The restaurant itself is tucked away on Grove Street (just off Morrison Street) and is tiny, just 5 tables, but with a comfy ‘front room’ kind of feel to it as well as some really striking artwork on the walls. Big smiles greeted us and we sat down to peruse the menu. Aside from the delicious smells, the first thing that struck me was how cheap it was, the lunch menu had starters at £2.50, Desserts at £1.50 and a lunch deal for £5.90

Fried Spring Rolls with dipping sauce

It looks like my new colleagues and I have a lot in common as despite a number of variations, we all opted for exactly the same things, starters of Fried Spring Rolls followed by a House Special Beef Stew, served with Rice.

The Spring Rolls were delicious, crispy and tasty with a fish filling that day. Served with a dipping sauce, they really didn’t last long. Thankfully, before we knew it 3 delicious bowls of beef arrived. This really was mouth-wateringly good tucker, it gave the tastebuds a workout as well as being well textured with all the ‘bits’ (rather than ground into a paste) and as I understand it completely authentic. In fact it claims to be Edinburgh’s only Vietnamese Restaurant.

Wanting to extend the experience we decided to round it off with a Vietnamese coffee, in itself a ritual. We all had cups with a metal filter contraption placed in front of us and were told to wait and she’d be back shortly. Sure enough she was, checking the water level and topping up if necessary. Once everything was to her satisfaction the filters were removed and we were instructed to stir as the milk was already in the bottom! It was an experience to say in the least, it had a burnt caramel taste to it and the milk seemed to be condensed, not at all unpleasant but with a very definite kick in it’s tail!

We all absolutely loved it and left with big smiles and delighted to have such a find on our doorstep. Outstanding value for money and a real treat for both the senses and the stomach! I’ve already been recommending it and am lunching there again next week!

Further info: Pho Vietnam isn’t licensed however they have a BYO policy, charged at a very reasonable £1 per person corkage. Due to the limited seating booking is advisable as is checking the opening hours.
