yummyTori – a new (& aptly named) Japanese restaurant on Lothian Road

Just back from a cheeky wee lunch at Lothian Road’s latest addition yummi Tori,  aptly named, it was delicious! You wont get your usual sushi/sashimi or miso soup here but you will find one of the most interesting and quirky Japanese menus I’ve seen, I wanted to try everything!

Mocktails – a Green Tea Mosc-jito and a Kiwi & Elderflower Refresher

The drinks menu boasts a number of exotic and refreshing mocktails, again I’d have had one of each! (and probably all the alcoholic ones too, ahem!) it!

a raw cabbage and fish sauce appetiser

Calamari with a creamy Wasabi Dip (centre)

The decor is as you would expect with a clear view through to the chefs in the kitchen, dark tables, a mixture of long sharing benches and private ones, Japanese lanterns and orchids.

just realised we didn’t order this – a ‘bonus’ dish of Chicken with Teriyaki Sauce

The Yakitori  (barbecue skewers) and Tapas were particularly good and according to a note on foursquare when I ‘checked in’ their bento boxes are great too! (as well as on a special introductory offer of £5).

Sliced Beef with spring onions in a Yakiniku Sauce

The service was a tad haphazard and the card machine wasn’t working but probably just minor teething troubles. The bill was an exceedingly reasonable £25 for two us including 2 mocktails. (and a bonus dish that I have no idea if we were charged for or not).

Yaki Ebi – Prawns rolled in Seaweed and Shaved Pork

Pork & Veggie Dumplings and the Yaki Ebi

I have no doubt that all the Yardies will be returning in the very near future! and I’m afraid that Chop Chop now has some competition for their dumplings. Judging by the number of local workers waiting for food to go, it’s already a big hit just one week into trading.  Hat Tip to AVM for spotting it!

Yummy, yummy, yummy! It’s not your average Japanese restaurant either with an extensive menu ( so much yet still to try) and those delicious mocktails. Can’t wait to go back for second helpings! 😉

Sadly, YummyTory let me down. I can’t comment on the food because I didn’t get to try it. I was attending a Japanese film festival at the cinema next door and meal times had to be fitted in between films. On the Saturday evening, the staff at YummyTori told me they opened at 4pm on Sunday. I really wanted to go and so opted to miss the 3pm film – which would give me from 4pm until 5.30pm to eat there and be in time for the next film. Sadly, when I arrived at 4pm, I was told they did not open until 5pm. So I had to go to Nando’s across the road instead. Not the taste experience I was hoping for!

Oh, how frustrating! That’s happened to me before (in another place), always disappointing when staff don’t know the opening times! Hopefully it’ll not put you off trying there again as I’ve had several lovely meals there now
