A (slightly disappointing) Dinner at Iris on Thistle Street

It’d been a while since I’d seen ‘Mr G’ and also since I’d last been to Iris so a catch up supper was well overdue! Thistle Street is an often forgotten ‘good shout’ when it comes to restaurants with Dusit Thai, Bon Vivant, Fishers in the City and Cafe St Honoré and Iris all nestling together there.

For starters I went for the Sticky Pork Belly and MrG the Duck with Mango, they were both very tasty although the duck was literally swimming in sauce, not sure if someone had been  a little heavy-handed or if that was standard.

For Mains, I was torn between the ‘special’ Lamb with chorizo and puy lentils and the duck breast with raspberries but as MrG went for the lamb, I went ‘duck’. The dishes themselves don’t come with any veg so we ordered a side of mixed veg and one of fries.

Mine was perfectly cooked and the sauce was delicious but I definitely had dish envy, the lamb was right up my street! The Argentinian Malbec we were washing it all down with was a triumph!

As for dessert, disappointingly no cheesecake on the menu and when I asked for a Liqueur Coffee instead I was told there wasn’t any cream. Luckily I’d spotted that the Chocolate Brownie dessert that MrG was eyeing up came with a cream sauce so I asked if they could use that, mission accomplished!

MrG’s verdict on pudding “one of the nicest desserts I’ve had in the last year, absolutely delicious and…” I can’t publish the rest of what he said!!!

Overall the quality was good, but I feel it was over-priced for what we got, the bill came to over £80 and the wine wasn’t an expensive bottle. There are many places of a much higher standard in Edinburgh at this price level that I would go to before returning here for supper (especially as I then went home and had some rice cakes as I was still hungry). The lunch menu is better value and would definitely recommend that instead.

Here’s my previous lunching experience at Iris

Hi Nadine. That food looks truly disgusting. I’ve been to Iris once and was also underwhelmed. David

Hi David, the food itself was nice enough (an iphone with flash never takes great photos) but it was very expensive for what we got not to mention I was still hungry when I got home!
