Excellent presents for a Food-Geek Heaven

Foodie related xmas presents were abundant in our household this Christmas but there were a few that are particularly notable so thought I’d share.

A Molecular Gastronomy Kit (a present from me to Dr Science)

Who hasn’t see Heston Blumenthal doing some weird & wonderful things with liquid nitrogen and bringing science in to the kitchen in a fantastical way?! Well this starter kit includes all you need to create some off the mill-run dishes such as mint caviar beads that burst in the mouth, chocolate spaghetti, lemon foam & tzatziki spheres!

Molecular gastronomy is a subdiscipline of food science that seeks to investigate, explain and make practical use of the physical and chemicaltransformations of ingredients that occur while cooking, as well as the social, artistic and technical components of culinary and gastronomic phenomena in general.[4] Molecular gastronomy is a modern style of cooking, which is practiced by both scientists and food professionals in many professional kitchens and labs and takes advantage of many technical innovations from the scientific disciplines.

‘Cooking For Geeks’ book (an accompanying gift from me to Dr Science)

‘Real Science, Great Hacks, and Good Food’. Graphs and tables abound within – what more could someone with a polar opposite cooking style to me (ie organised and scientific) want to read?! It looks like a fascinating read so will be perusing myself as well!

Larousse Gastronomique (from my parentals to me)

This has been sitting on my Amazon wish-list for years (a sucker for weighty food tomes I did a deal with myself not to buy anymore) so was delighted to finally get my hands on this Foodies ‘Bible’.

The back cover sums it up pretty neatly I’d say!

Vintage style champagne bowls (from the in-laws to me)

Not technically for food geeks but I simply adore these glasses! I’ve spent years scouring antique and second-hand stores in the hope of finding some vintage champagne bowls without joy! These aren’t vintage but are so beautifully crafted you’d never know so I won’t tell if you don’t!

It also means that we’ve had to have a lot of bubbles recently so that they can be duly admired as it just doesn’t really have the same effect when using red wine (I know I’ve tried!).

PS I’m still on the hunt for more though so if anyone sees any I’d be delighted to hear

So all in all a very geeky foodie heavenly festive period for us! Maybe I could get to like Christmas after all…Although I think you’d all shudder if I told you what I had for my christmas day lunch – egg & chips, it’s true I’m afraid but was bloody lovely!

Love the glasses too, I’ve been looking for these for a while too. I’ve tried ebay but they only seem to have those tacky looking (mid-80’s) ones with the gold rims, I want ornate!
