Ice Delight – a fat & dairy free dessert – oh yes!

I was recently asked if I would be happy to try out local grower, Belhaven Fruit’s range of fat and dairy-free desserts and to offer some honest feedback. Still battling the #foodbloggerbelly this seemed like an ideal treat product so of course I was very happy to do so!

The blurb: “New(ish) from Belhaven Fruit Farm, IceDelight is everything you wish ice-cream could be and more. We’ve blended our home-grown Scottish fruit with an authentic Italian recipe to create a unique, luxuriously creamy dessert as healthy and tasty as real fruit.”

The flavours: raspberry, strawberry, blackcurrant, lemon and gooseberry & elderflower (and we were able to sample all five – happy days!)

The verdict: It’s good! Really zingy flavours, sweet enough to satisfy anyone’s sugar cravings and at 90 cals for 100ml and fat free, it’s become a regular & guilt-free dessert for ‘DrScience’ especially (I don’t have a hugely sweet tooth so less is more for me) . They have a lovely soft texture and are nicely packaged in 100ml snack pots or family sized cartons.

They would also make fabulous palate cleansers – I’m going to try dropping the lemon or raspberry ones into some ginger beer and try and create my own version of the amazing one served in Wedgwood

My favourites are the lemon and the raspberry and ‘Science’ prefers the strawberry & the raspberry. The blackcurrant one is a must for all Ribena fans

    I’m pleased to hear the product tastes good.

    The packaging is very weak from a retail freezer point of view.

    Trixy typography but no stand out.

    I think they will almost certainly have to revise this soon.

    Looking at it’s product history it looks like it’s already undergone a few changes. I like the packaging but you’re right I hadn’t thought about it from a retailer’s perspective where space is at a premium.

      It is incredible how many brand owners don’t talk to the Multiples about their packaging before they commit to such as expensive undertaking.

      The Multiples may be hard nosed retailers, but they know what shifts units and what doesn’t.

      The problem with this particular design is that it is trying to be all light and fluffy which is fine if people understand the USP, but not so good if it’s a brand new category.

      What a shame.

    good point David, I don’t actually know them but it may be worth while dropping them a line – could be very timely!
