Itchycoo at The Radisson Blu

Last week I was invited along to try the new Sea, Field, Farm & Heaven menu at Itchycoo – the restaurant in The Radisson on The Royal Mile. I wouldn’t normally go to a hotel restaurant, lot less one on the Royal Mile but the name was so appealing I thought I’d give it a 1 (1)

The menu was interesting & I loved that you can order starter or main size portions of a lot of the dishes – probably no need to tell you that my starter & main both came from the ‘Farm’ section – a veal escalope with mash to start and Inverurie Farm Pork Belly for my main with the intriguingly sounding ‘air bags’. Bees chose the soft shelled crab, not something you see that often on UK menu’s, especially not in non-Asian restaurants, followed by Chicken ‘n’ Haggis.

The veal was lovely, although it could’ve done with a wedge of lemon to lend a bit of ‘bite’ to the dish and the pork belly was lovely as was the sauce, not convinced on the ‘air bags’ though! (Turns out it was cheesy popcorn which I didn’t really think gelled with the rest of the dish –  Bees happily took them off my hands). We had a lovely Malbec wine to wash it all down

For dessert, I somewhat predictably went for a cheeseboard & Bees the ‘Cone, Lolly & Shake (I knew she would just from the name). The cheese board was actually for 2 people so although tasty (& washed down with a couple of ports, and some help from Bees), it still beat me. Bees looked like a kid in a candy shop when she got hers, the mini ice cream cone made her day and the chocolate milkshake & Maltesers blancmange all disappeared at record speed!

Verdict, the food was good, (apart from the, out of place, ‘airbags’ IMOH), prices are probably on a par with central hotels but there’s no getting away from the fact it’s a hotel restaurant, our table faced the check-in desk so there was no escaping it but equally nothing they can really do about it.

The staff were excellent, our waitress was personable,  knowledgeable and took it all in her stride when she caught me flicking my airbags over to Bees.
