Last Thursday night saw the official launch of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and we had preview tickets to see Camille, although that is an entirely different story in itself!
I’d been invited along to Treacle to sample a couple of cocktails and some food, and with my ‘bed & board’ for the night being just round the corner, we took the opportunity to try it out – it’s often been a nightcap stop & I wouldn’t necessarily have thought of it as a place to eat so always good to broaden my horizons!
On arrival we met the Manager, Mike, who gave us a run through of food & cocktail menus, and I have to say, we were pretty impressed with the options on both! I’ve also been inspired to have a go at my own rhubarb gin and beetroot vodka/whisky – got loads of ideas from our chat!
We started with a couple of cocktails from their new Summer Collection – a Rhubarb Spritz (rhubarb infused Hendrick’s, Aperol, Martini Rosato, Rose Syrup, lemon, soda & Prosecco) for me, and Bees had an Eastern Highball (Bombay Saphire, lemon & house batch Ginseng, Kaffir lime & lemongrass soda).
The menu was pretty extensive so we went for the recommended sharing platter with crispy coconut chicken, craft ale battered prawns, pok pok chicken wings, sweet potato chips, sticky plum dip and red chilli & mint verdita. Then added a couple of sides, toasted coconut & cauliflower tempura with a sweet & sour chilli glaze, a honey & soy glazed pak choi with water chestnuts and toasted cashews and the intriguing sounding crying tiger dip!
Winners for me were the coconut chicken, the cauliflower tempura and the fabby crying tiger dip, although it was all tasty!
Our second cocktails came from their main drinks menu, and I had …And The Beet Goes On, quite possibly the best cocktail I’ve ever tasted – Jack Daniel’s, Cassis, smashed beetroot, fresh lemon, apple & grapefruit sherbet.
Bees went for the very pretty looking , ‘Flowering Pot’ (Hendrick’s, Violette, lemon and Hibiscus pink peppercorn infused Noilly Prat.
Unfortunately we had to neck our last cocktails & head off to our show but will definitely be back for more.
The only downside was that it was a bit like sitting in a disco, and it wasn’t late, maybe that’s just another sign I’m turning in to a grumpy old woman and to be fair it was a slightly younger/trendier crowd.
