NEW Cannonball Restaurant, Gelateria & Cafe on Royal Mile

I’ve long been a fan of Continis (formerly Centotre) so will be looking forward to seeing Victor & Carina’s new venture.

A unique partnership has transformed one of the Royal Mile’s most historic buildings into a food and drink experience unlike anything else in Scotland.

Sixteenth century Cannonball House has undergone an ambitious renovation to create a landmark restaurant, gelateria, and caffe spread over three floors with spectacular views of the Castle and the city of Edinburgh.

The project has been undertaken by Victor and Carina Contini who already own Contini Ristorante on George Street and The Scottish Cafe & Restaurant at the Scottish National Gallery on The Mound.

With a porridge bar, artisan gelateria and Italian street food café, the newly opened Contini Caffe celebrates the couple’s Italian heritage with a food offering to match. Menu highlights include antipasti, more than 16 delicious flavours of ice cream sundaes, traditional hot and cold Panini and chilled red and white wine from the Veneto on draft.

Cannonball, our showcase restaurant on the top floor, serves the best of Scotland with dishes like Stornoway Black Pudding Risotto, Clash Farm Slow Roast Pork Belly and Macaroni Cheese with East Lothian Lobster Thermidor Sauce. Open for lunch and dinner from Wednesday to Saturday and on Sundays from 10am until 8pm for brunch, Sunday roast, high tea and supper, the landmark restaurant looks over the Castle Esplanade and Edinburgh’s historic Old Town. The space is also available for exclusive hire.

The new venture’s interior is inspired by the Contini’s family business heritage with hints of tartan mixed with great Italian style. 

“This building is our newest food adventure in Edinburgh and we are very proud to be working with the world renowned Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo”, said owner Carina Contini.

“We’ve taken all the lessons we’ve learned from a decade running our Italian restaurant on George Street and our Scottish restaurant at The Mound and focussed them into our new venture

“It is in a prime location at the top of the Royal Mile so we want to make sure visitors and locals get the very best hospitality experience. On the top floor we celebrate Scotland with amazing fresh, seasonal produce and breathtaking picture postcard views. On the lower levels we are proving fast food can be good food with a Caffe menu plus our porridge bar and gelateria serving proper ice cream.”

‘’It is unlike anything else in Scotland and really does offer something for everyone”, said Carina.

The project is a partnership between the Continis and the building’s owners, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Each year, the Tattoo, through its assorted activities, distributes a significant proportion of its surplus funds to charitable arts and service benevolent organisations.

Tattoo Chief Executive Brigadier David Allfrey MBE welcomed the partnership announcement, which is an operational first for the organisation.

“We are proud and privileged to be working with the Continis on this project. We started work on the concept nearly 18 months ago and it is wonderful to see it progressing, the ideas for the internal layout coming together and, of course, the prospect of great food and drink. From my perspective, this partnership represents another wonderful opportunity to offer visitors to Edinburgh a rich and varied choice. This is all to the good for the City and for Scotland”, he said.

The building opened in August following a sensitive remodelling of the ancient listed building. Originally a private home, a century ago it became Castlehill School but in recent years it has served as the logistical base for the Tattoo.
