A Private Chef at Home – What A Brilliant Experience!

Q. Nadine, would you be interested in hosting a dinner party in your own home for 8 people, where we’ll send a chef round to cook for you, at no cost or inconvenience to yourself?

A. Erm, well let me think about that for a nanosecond…

I love to host dinner parties and really enjoy cooking for others but there are certainly times when it would be lovely not to spend a whole day preparing and then half the evening (and the following day) clearing up.

La Belle Assiette is a company that sends Private Chefs to people’s homes to cater – they create bespoke menus, source all the ingredients, bring all their own equipment, right down to the crockery and cutlery, and cook and serve your meal to you and your guests and then clear up and leave as though they’ve never been there.

The week before the dinner I spoke with Giuseppe Manzoli, our Chef for the evening to discuss the night and menu etc and it was left that he would arrive around 6pm on the day of the dinner ready to begin service at 8pm.

Following the call I was surprised to receive 8 nicely printed menus for our guests, a nice touch for the table, not that they would really help that much as Giuseppe turned out to be quite the ‘extras’ man.

Giuseppe and his van arrived about 5.30 and then he unloaded pretty much everything but the kitchen sink – I kid you not, there was a table, a trolley, a water bath, a hob, a deep fat fryer, a water tower, an ice cream maker, saucepans, glasses, cutlery, crockery, and of course all the food. Our kitchen was unrecognizable within just half an hour.

As our guests arrived he made up cocktails with fresh strawberries, vodka and tonic water – really good, will definitely be making those again!

Giuseppe was utterly charming as a host, his enthusiasm and passion for his food was just bursting out of him – his food was lovingly prepared with just one aim, to delight his diners – with everything made fresh and each dish looking beautiful – it’s pretty clear from quite how much he prepared that he loves his job!

To say we were spoilt rotten is an understatement – he went above and beyond – he even brought 4 different types of tea, in case anyone fancied that instead of coffee. People keep pushing me for favourites – it’s hard though, it was all to delightful and to an incredibly high standard – the sweet potato gnocchi & lamb dish was a total triumph, the goat’s cheese arancini, delicioso and the homemade pasta, divine!

We had the best evening, and despite being convinced we wouldn’t need to eat again for another week somehow the leftover cheese managed to become my breakfast. I’m also pretty sure that our kitchen was left in a better state than it was before it was taken over for the evening!

We all agreed that this is a brilliant service and that a starting price of £39 per head is very reasonable (NB we did not pay for this evening). Personally, as a host, it made the evening so much more enjoyable not having to worry about anything except enjoying myself as much as the guests. I have a feeling that Giuseppe will be back in Nine Mile Burn before too long!
