My Top Restaurants

People often ask me where I can recommend or which is my favourite restaurant and with the abundance of great places to eat here in Edinburgh, I find it really difficult to pluck just one from the air. I guess it depends on the occasion, the people involved, the price point and what someone is looking for from that particular dining experience, but once furnished with that information I can usually offer some great tailored suggestions, but it has gotten me thinking…. So, with this in mind here I’m going to keep a list of my current top rated places to eat in Edinburgh, (some I’ve blogged, others I haven’t) but essentially these are the restaurants that I rate and have no hesitation in recommending or revisiting time and again.

Locanda De Gusti, Dalry Road

Wow, Wow Wow, a dining experience to fall in love with and to! This place gives you a mahoosive big kiss and will keep you smiling for days. The porcini & parmesan ravioli with truffle oil and mixed grilled seafood dishes are stunning!

Wedgwood, Royal Mile

Oh, what a fantastic find. Top quality Scottish produce, exquisitely cooked and presented. A lovely unpretentious dining environment with friendly, down to earth and attentive staff. The only problem is trying to decide which of the amazing dishes on offer to choose.

 Mark Greenaway, North Castle Street

Mark is a super guy with a flair for the unusual, creating exciting, cutting edge dishes all laced with a little childish delight. The restaurant is classy and the menu rocks!

The Honours, North Castle Street

This brasserie style restaurant from Michelin Restauranteur Martin Wishart combines fine dining and a relaxed atmosphere in a handy city centre location. The staff are uber friendly and helpful, the decor is modern and a great place for a business lunch or a weekend visit.

Chop Chop, Morrison Street (& Commercial Quay, Leith)

This is not just now a delicious and very handy lunching venue but also top of my list when it comes to Chinese takeaway. Not your usual MSG-filled stodge but fresh and exciting oriental cuisine. They are famed for their dumplings however their cumin lamb and chilli stir fried beef are firm favourites! Sign up for their free loyalty card for really worthwhile rewards.

Also Worth a Mention

Angels With Bagpipes, opposite St Giles Cathedral, Royal Mile

I love love love this restaurant! I’ve eaten here several times since it opened last summer. Run by Marina Crolla, of renowned Valvona & Crolla clan it makes a statement. Beautuful decor, great location, super staff and food to die for, an Italian/Scottish fusion using the best ingredients I can’t recommend it enough! Favourites include the Orkney Lamb, Calves Liver, the Primitivo and the Cheeseboard accompanied by a Fonsecca 98 Port.

L’escargot Bleu, Broughton Street (or equally L’escargot Blanc, West End)

This charming restaurant just oozes ‘Gallicity’, the authentic French food comforts you and the wines caress, enveloping the diner with the most wonderful sense of enormous well-being. Highly satisfying.

La Piazza, Shandwick Place

My mouth simply waters every time I think of La Piazza’s Tortelloni with Black Truffle, Norcina Sausage, Red Wine & Porcini Sauce, to die for! Crisp linen, old fashioned and pristine waiters, a fantastic venue for a business lunch!

Café Andaluz, George Street

Not usually a fan of chain/themed restaurants but Cafe Andaluz is a reliable option, I love the almost Moroccan inspired decor, delightful tapas dishes and easy, friendly dining environment. Chorizo with red wine, spicy ox cheeks and the house red, highly recommended

The Dogs, Hanover Street

Since opening, a few years ago and the original of David Ramsden’s ‘Dogs’ chain, it’s been a firm favourite for incredibly reasonably priced Scottish seasonal fare, I always make a visit with visiting friends and family. The (very) spicy liver is my ultimate dish when it’s on the menu.

Kyloe, The Rutland, Shandwick Place

Kyloe (the Scottish name for Highland cattle) has set it’s sights on being a Gourmet Steak restaurant and having been back several times already since it’s opening I guess I’m in agreement! :o)
