The Honours – a new Brasserie from Martin Wishart

The Verdict – when can I go back? I think The Honours is going to set a new standard for Brasserie style dining in Edinburgh, high quality food, exceptional service in a relaxed modern environment. The prices were very reasonable – I’ve often paid more for totally substandard experiences in other places. At no point were we rushed and nothing was too much trouble for the staff with their ready smiles and clear eagerness and pride in this venture! I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it and would definitely think about returning for the Prix Fixe or Pre Theatre offerings. With over 1400 bookings until the end of August already in the diary, I’d recommend getting on the blower as soon as you can!

Spoon Cafe / Bistro – I’d spooner not thanks!

How do I sum this one up? the service – laughable, it really did feel like being in Basil Fawlty’s dining room! The only apology we received for this farce was for the waiter’s sunburn!!! We would most definitely have walked out if it wasn’t pre-paid. The food, below par – the starters were fine but the mains weren’t great. For £10 each it wasn’t a financial disaster but for that price I’d rather go to The Dogs and have something well presented, no nonsense & really tasty! Would we ever go back? definitely not based on this experience! (I have been advised by a friend that their breakfasts are great but the evenings are a bit hit & miss so maybe one to avoid for anything other than coffee / brunch).

Mark Greenaway at 12 Picardy Place – a pre Theatre cheeky

Strawberry Blonde, AVM and myself were all off to see Vincent & Flavia in their new show, Midnight Tango last week at The Playhouse so decided a return visit to Mark Greenaway was in order, I was last there for the launch party and have heard plenty of good reports since so it was well […]

NOT eating shellfish at The Mussel Inn!

Verdict: The food was good, the service excellent and a was a great taste of the seaside bang in the city-centre. Would I return? If I could eat shellfish Yes, definitely, however as the menu has limited options for non shellfish diners, I could maybe eke out one more visit.

Maison Bleue (oh mon dieu!)

To summarise, a lovely quirky interior, a really tasty sounding menu and excellent service but I don’t recommend you go on a Sunday! Such a shame that it turned out to be such an expensive disappointment! I’d love to hear from anyone that’s eaten there when the normal Chef is on though as it’s certainly not something I would risk again on the strength of our experience.

La Garrigue in the Old Town (Guest Blog)

All in all, we thought La Garrigue was superb. A few glitches with friendly service (the coffees and the bill took a long time to arrive at the end) but that didn’t take from our experience. I was pleased to see the Chef/Owner, Jean Michel Gauffre out and about smiling around the restaurant.

BYOB at Beirut Lebanese Restaurant, South Side, Edinburgh

Due to the timelapse (& perhaps the amount of fizz & wine consumed), I’ll keep it brief but Salt n’Sass, Salidatious, The Pineapple, Strawberry Blonde and I, greedy guts that we are, still all made it up to Marshall Street in the Southside to try Edinburgh’s first Lebanese restaurant.

Pasta & Primitivo at La Partenope (Cucina Napoletana, Dalry Road)

On to the mains, my Carbonara was excellent, one of the best I’ve had in a VERY long time, whilst SB’s Pasta Fresca was very nice, it was also very subtle and for a main course portion it could have done with a lift both in seasoning and perhaps texture. On asking for some salt the waiter was entertainingly ‘disgusted’ by our request with that Latin insouciance that I know so well, having dated an Italian Chef myself! (Once added, however it lifted the dish enormously regardless of what he thought!)

A disappointing lunch at Elliot’s Bar & Restaurant, Apex Waterloo Place

Now to the lesson in cookery! You’re going to like this! As the payment was going through we were asked if everything had been ok, I started with the usual British polite untruth but indignancy allowed me to find my voice and say “yes, except for the slow service” to which we were treated to the reason for the delay! Apparently it takes a very long time to cook a fish cake to get the centre hot! By this time keeping a straight face was nigh on impossible, but the ridiculousness of it all, had at least broken my annoyance, especially when I realised what an entertaining blog this would be. (In case you were wondering, no tip was left!)

Supper at The Saint in Stockbridge

After Mr G’s first appearance on Eating Edinburgh back in the Autumn (Mange Tout a L’escargot Bleu) he was keen to catch up and get another ‘slice of fame’. Being late January we were both looking for something cheap & cheerful so decided to check on 5pm.co.uk to see if there were any good deals in the city centre. […]
