A working week and eating out (every day!) while on a diet! (how do you think I did?)

Well folks, this is a blog on last week’s lunches out! It started so well and I went for the ‘good’ options but it completely went to pot on Weds when I was seduced by a cheeky creme brulee! Monday – Kyloe, The Rutland (not bad – rump steak burger, no bun & salad, no […]

Where I’ve been pigging out in recent weeks (Part 1) – yes, really!

I seem to have been eating out so much recently and caught up in the pre-Xmas chaos that I’ve had little time to write things up. So for ease I thought I’d share some pictures of my recent greedy exploits.

I’m ashamed to say that there are actually so many that I’m going to have to split it into 2 posts!

Kyloe, Edinburgh’s new Gourmet Steak Restaurant at The (newly-refurbed) Rutland

To summarise, it was good, REALLY tasty meat and a really interesting pleasurable dining experience, a couple of tweaks would make it perfect but it’s still in soft launch mode, the official opening is tomorrow (the 28th). Handily situated just around the corner, we will definitely be going back, and taking clients, moving forwards! It’s a quality offering at a quality price point but if you’re on a budget there are cheaper set-menu options for lunch or dinner. Yes, they knew I was coming and that it would be blogged but we did find it hard to pick fault, apart from the chips and a bit of a delay in paying for our drinks, neither major issue,s I’ll be happy to recommend and return as a fully paying customer.

Steaks at the Smokestack (Guest Blog from Dr Science)

This really sums up the appeal of this restaurant. They have taken the same approach to using quality ingredients, simply and perfectly prepared for years, and kept that formula consistent.

The Honours – a new Brasserie from Martin Wishart

The Verdict – when can I go back? I think The Honours is going to set a new standard for Brasserie style dining in Edinburgh, high quality food, exceptional service in a relaxed modern environment. The prices were very reasonable – I’ve often paid more for totally substandard experiences in other places. At no point were we rushed and nothing was too much trouble for the staff with their ready smiles and clear eagerness and pride in this venture! I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it and would definitely think about returning for the Prix Fixe or Pre Theatre offerings. With over 1400 bookings until the end of August already in the diary, I’d recommend getting on the blower as soon as you can!

Maison Bleue (oh mon dieu!)

To summarise, a lovely quirky interior, a really tasty sounding menu and excellent service but I don’t recommend you go on a Sunday! Such a shame that it turned out to be such an expensive disappointment! I’d love to hear from anyone that’s eaten there when the normal Chef is on though as it’s certainly not something I would risk again on the strength of our experience.

Wedgwood – Oh SO good!

The decor is elegant and simple with clean lines and some striking focal points. The staff were friendly and informative, the food exquisite, high quality, well presented and with flavours that surprise & delight (pallate cleanser & the fig with the venison in particular), it’s fine dining without the formality that comes with a Michelin star. I’ve found myself a new favourite restaurant and can’t wait to return to sample the new Spring menu which is launching this week.

A cheeky Steak Tartare (& the rest!) at The Witchery

The master plan had been to have a couple of glasses of wine before arriving then have 2 steak tartares, a glass of wine each & leave therefore keeping the bill to a minimum. Did that happen? Of course not, especially when SB got talking with the Sommelier, our fate was gloriously sealed!

Guest Blog – Bisque Bar & Brasserie

The steak looked nice enough, mushrooms and tomatoes were appealing additions, but the mountain of chips was not! Less is often more, this plate was so stuffed with chips that to retrieve any morsel, you ended up with a few casualties on the table. Worse, both steaks were overdone. Very bad steak etiquette! I would have been satisfied in a pub, but not at £17.95 for the privilege.

Opening night at Los Argentinos (Edinburgh’s own Fawlty Towers)

It was such a massive disappointment and the most inauthentic ‘themed’ restaurant I’ve ever eaten in. I’m not sure whether to be more angry at the insult to my intelligence or to my pocket! Based on the menus and wine list I can’t believe for a minute that the owners have ever even been to Argentina.
