Champagne & sharing platters – The Pommery Bar in The Signet Library

When a friend, who happens to be doing the PR for the pop-up Pommery Champagne Bar, asked if I fancied going to try it out with her one evening, I was hardly going to refuse! A chance for a good catch-up and to sample some tasty Scottish produce and all washed down with bubbles? Thanking you kindly!

The Signet Library is an exclusive venue on the Royal Mile next to St Giles Cathedral which isusually only open for private events so it’s a real treat to get the chance to go inside and soak up the elegantly decadent interior – where better to host a pop-up Champagne bar than in the heart of the Festival action yet tucked away from the bustle.

It almost broke me when I had to refuse the roast Lobster with potato wedges & aioli (curses shellfish allergy) however the sharing platters on offer all sounded fabulous, and incredibly reasonable at £12.50-£15.00.  A glass of Brut Royal in hand I was feeling really quite at home!

The food was quick to arrive and was right up my street, colourful, fresh and clearly of a high quality, the only problem was where to begin. It didn’t daunt us too much however and the plates were pretty deftly deconstructed. (I especially loved the vibrant beetroot smoked salmon from East Pier Smokehouse in St Monans, Fife and also the tastiest pesto I have ever had! (will let you know when I find out where it was from as I’ll be stocking up).

There was a lovely genteel yet luxurious atmosphere, the staff were excellent and it was also a great place to people-watch. I think I’ve found myself the perfect hideaway haunt for the rest of the festival and I know where I’ll be taking all my Festival visitors the rest of this month. The Champagne Afternoon Tea and The Champagne Tasting Menu (like a great handbag, one for each season) both sound great.

Offers: There are a number of fantastic offers available but IMO the best are the VIP ones, which you can download here

Tip – Also if you take along a copy of The Fringe Guide, check pg 53, that will give you (and each member of your party) a £9 glass of fizz for £5!

Pommery Fringe Event: on the 14th/15th August, Pommery will be holding exclusive private champagne tasting tutorials with Sarah Hicks, Pommery’s UK Ambassador, offering seasonal champagnes followed by Roasted Lobster and more champagne in the bar after, sounds a steal at £50pp (Tickets available from The Fringe Box Office)

Pommery Champagne Cafe Bar will be at the The Signet Library (next to St Giles Cathedral) on the Royal Mile until the 29th August 2012, 11am – 11pm.
